Disability Advocacy

Gifts and Assets – this is a coalition of disability and low-income groups, self-advocates, and academics advocating for an increase in the amount of fluid assets a person receiving ODSP is allowed to keep. This group started as a local initiative, but has support from across the province.

Every Canadian Counts – Formed in 2013, this is a coalition of individuals and organizations advocating for a national disability support program for Canadians living with long-term chronic challenges.

People First of Canada – This organization of self-advocates has been around since the 1970s – their voices are the inspiration for us.

SSAH & Passport Coalition – This group has been around for awhile, and are basically trying to get more transparency and access to resources via these two direct funding programs.

Canadian Association for Community Living – Advocacy at a national level, the community living movement started in the 1960s, in response to family pressures to provide supports to individuals who did not go to institutional settings and those whose families wanted to bring their family members home.

ACORN – National in scope, with a local Ottawa/Gatineau group, ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) this organization lobbies for social justice for low- and middle-income residents.
